Okay wow… it has been a minute since I last blogged. Like… do I still know how to do this? Well, we’re about to find out. Lately I’ve been feeling super nostalgic about how this whole photography journey started for me. And spoiler alert: it wasn’t weddings.
It was families.
Sticky fingers, wild energy, kids doing their own thing, parents just trying to keep up, that’s where it all began. I fell in love with photographing real life as it’s happening, not the “everyone sit still and smile perfectly” version of it. Because let’s be honest, that’s not real life. Family sessions are beautifully chaotic. There’s running, wiggling, laughing, maybe a dramatic moment or two (we’ve all been there), and I love it all. I never want to take that away or turn it into something stiff. I want your photos to feel like your life, playful, loud, emotional, and full of personality. Yes, that includes the tears and the belly laughs.
And in between all the weddings and engagements, this right here? This is my bread and butter. This session happened on a weekday in Los Angeles, and let me set the scene: overcast skies, a little sprinkle here and there, and absolutely zero sunshine. California said “not today.” But honestly? It made everything feel extra cozy and real. Now here’s a little secret, while my photos look super candid, I’m actually doing a lot of behind-the-scenes guiding. Not stiff posing, but more like “hey put your hand here,” or “lean into each other,” and then we let the magic happen. I'll read your cues and attune myself to what the kids are feeling. Adaptability is my secret sauce and what makes the photo sessions so fun! Because not everyone just magically becomes “candid” on command and that’s totally okay.
This family though? Absolute dream. They were all in, laughing, playing, trusting the process, and just being themselves. Those are always the sessions that hit different. These are the photos I end up completely obsessed with. The kind where you can almost hear the giggles just by looking at them. The kind that feel.
And don’t worry, we definitely got those classic, everyone-looking-and-smiling shots too. You know, the ones that make it to the wall and into frames at Grandma’s house. If you haven't done a family session with me yet, let's get to it! Life does not wait! xoxo, Bora
